Nick Appleton's Homepage

Hi, my name is Nick and welcome to my personal webpage! I grew up in Blaxland in NSW's Blue Mountains and currently live in Sydney's Inner West.

I am a final year Electrical Engineering student at the University of Technology Sydney specialising in software, embedded systems and electronics.

In my spare time I enjoy listening to and playing music (pipe organ). I particularly enjoy the works of Bach and Buxtehude - but I enjoy a broad range of music from rock to electronica.

Spawning from my musical passions, I also create sample sets for digital pipe organs which I publish for free on my web page. I am a member of the Organ Music Society of Sydney (OMSS) and the Organ Historical Trust of Australia (OHTA) and think that there is substantial historical preservation value in making these sample sets. I also develop software relating to sample set production - currently all that has been published is a noise reduction package and an automatic looping package but I hope to expand this portfolio in the near future. Eventually, I would like to write and publish a cross-platform audio editor specifically designed for multi-track recording and sample set preparation combining all of the utilities which I have created so far. I particularly enjoy writing signal processing applications when they are related to audio signals and am fascinated by the science behind sound and how we hear it. My undergraduate thesis (which I am writing this year) is on my noise reduction algorithm.

I really enjoy developing free software and am an avid Linux user. Although I distribute my software binaries in Windows PE Executable format, most of my development is done under Linux and Linux binaries will always be provided on request.

I also love spending time with friends, going for coffee, watching movies. I am a Christian and attend Drummoyne Presbyterian Church.

My dream careers would be in academics, electronic audio development (amplifier design, computer-audio-interfaces, digital organs/synthesisers, etc) or audio software development.
